Sunday of Lent
FIRST READING
Gen 2.7 to 9, from 3.1 to 7
Genesis
The Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being.
Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. The Lord God made to grow from the ground every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life in the midst of the garden the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
The serpent was more crafty than any wild animals that God had done and said to the woman: "It is true that God says:" You shall not eat of any tree of the garden '? ". The woman answered the serpent: "Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat, but the fruit tree which is in the midst of the garden that God said:" You must not eat and do not you touch it, lest you die '. " But the serpent said unto the woman: "You will not die! God knows that the day when you eat would open your eyes and you'd be like God, knowing good and evil. "
The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eye and desirable for gaining wisdom, she took of its fruit and ate, she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then he opened the eyes of both of them and knew they were naked; sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.

PSALM
RESPONSORIAL
from Ps 50
Forgive us, Lord, for we have sinned.
mercy on me, O God, in your love, in your great mercy
clears my iniquity.
Wash me completely from my guilt,
make me pure from my sin.
Yes le mie iniquità io le riconosco,
il mio peccato mi sta sempre dinanzi.
Contro di te, contro te solo ho peccato,
quello che è male ai tuoi occhi, io l’ho fatto.
Crea in me, o Dio, un cuore puro,
rinnova in me uno spirito saldo.
Non scacciarmi dalla tua presenza
e non privarmi del tuo santo spirito.
Rendimi la gioia della tua salvezza,
sostienimi con uno spirito generoso.
Signore, apri le mie labbra
e la mia bocca proclami la tua lode.

Wash me completely from my guilt,
make me pure from my sin.

SECONDA LETTURA
Rm 5,12-19

SINGING THE GOSPEL
Mt 4:4 b
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
not live by bread alone man, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory!
GOSPEL
4.1 to 11 Mt
At that time, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said: "If you are the Son of God, 'that these stones become bread." But he said: "It is written:" One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. "
Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed it on the highest point of the temple and said: "If you are the Son of God, cast thyself down, for it is written:" For He will command His angels concerning you and they will bring on their hands because your foot against a stone "." Jesus replied, "it is written:" Do not test the Lord thy God. "
Then the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, and said: "All these things will I give thee if, falling at my feet and worship me." Then Jesus said to him: "Go away, Satan! For it is written: "The Lord your God, you'll love: to worship Him alone". "
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

COMMENT ON READING
"Jesus was led by the Spirit in the desert. " Lent is the time in the desert, but a desert illuminated by the Spirit. Of a desert so fertile, not sterile, because the Spirit gives life (cf. Jn 6:63). A time of grace, then, because time of rebirth and new life, real life.
But to be reborn you must first agree to die. That is why the desert "to be tempted by the devil." To relive must look death in the face, and he who has the power of death, the devil "(cf. Heb 2.14). Each of us - more or less consciously - it brings in a death instinct undermines the way and makes it at times tortuous, gloomy, full of anguish. Each of us somewhere inside himself is vulnerable. The devil knows. And there sinks the knife of temptation.
This happens every day, all we experience. The "many falls" of which Paul speaks is not so much those of the vast multitude of people is the humanity of all time, but our personal "many falls." Lent is the time to look seriously to face them with courage. The desert is this: to confront ourselves, to read our poverty, knowing that when we're alone ... the devil will come and help us! Sure, it's paradoxical, but it will help, he is forced by "stronger than him" (Lk 11.22) to serve the plan of God for ever and ever. It will help us in revealing the boundaries of our shadows, our vulnerability.
And 'what happens to Jesus the Word made flesh feel our hunger: a hunger for bread, hunger for success, hungry for power. The hunger that lives there, which attracts us, that distracts us. Even Jesus took this in his infinite love for man. It goes into the desert to face it.
All goes well for forty days and forty nights. Please be careful, because when all is well that the tempter approaches. As S. Paul reminds us elsewhere: "Anyone who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall" ( 1 Cor 10:12). Beware excessive self-confidence, security in our own strength. The tempter is lurking and waiting for just the time when we are so sure of ourselves that we do not think that we must entrust to God as Jesus
not him who is God, always responding to the triple temptation with the Word, that's was taught by the patient care of Mary and Joseph. He, the Word made flesh, He does not choose to be saving Word, but relies on word of the Church, the word that has been delivered. "It is written." It says nothing again, repeating what is written. Almost as tempting to say: "Yeah you know I've lost, it is already written, because you still insist?".

Almost as tempting to say: "Yeah you know I've lost, it is already written, because you still insist?".
So it is with us. There is no temptation for which there is already a clear answer in the Word and tradition, that the Word became guardian and interpreter for centuries. Everything is already written. There is nothing new to invent, it is just to make the memory of what we have heard so many times.
For our hunger for bread, there is a word that can satisfy and not so much give and not only the bodily life, but the eternal one.
For our hunger for success, there a word somewhere that teaches us to recognize the many miracles have already been made by God in our daily lives, freeing us from magical expectations.
For our hunger for power, there is certainly a word that saves us from idolatry and shows us how to reach the wisdom which is well preferred her to scepter and throne, for his glory will never fade (cf. Sap 7.8 to 10).
There is this word, just search with patience and love with the deposit of faith that the Church holds.

"Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him." E 'paradise: the paradise that the progenitors have sold for a silly and presumptuous disobedience, Jesus regained with his humble submission to the Word. And 'the beginning, just the beginning. The devil goes away to return later to play the final battle, the most raw, the most terrible ... the one through which Jesus regain paradise forever.
But already in the beginning it contained the dynamic of the paschal mystery which we celebrate solemnly at the end of this holy season. Jesus faces the death even now, to defeat the fear of death and prepare for the final decisive battle against the forces of evil, thanks to which we will gain eternal life.

E 'then a matter of life or death.
Adam and Eve looking for life, like all of us: a full life, real life, life that does not pass, that life which is only of God ("You'd be like God ..."). Nothing wrong with that ... But it is wrong way, because, paradoxically, trying to be like God contrary to his command. They go in the opposite direction and so face the pain and death.
Then Jesus, being God, he chose to become man, then to die, to give Adam his divinity and make it truly immortal. It teaches us the right way: follow him, in his death for the dynamics of life.
Let us follow, then, confronting our fears, calling them by name, recognizing the voice of temptation that is in us. But armed with this sword of the infallible Word, which alone can defend and we can help bring victory.
Maybe it will be a hard journey: the desert is not always easy to cross, because it is not easy to come face to face with their own poverty. But the only way to dig into us that space capable of humility to accept "God's grace and gift in the grace of the one man Jesus Christ" and the wilderness, our desert will bloom ... and Easter!

FOR MEDITATION
After communion
Meeting with the Lord Jesus reveals that invincible nostalgia that we carry within us all. He can heal our wounds and our sin, it can transform our fear and cowardice. Chiediamoglielo from my heart, this new beginning of Lent, accepting as addressed to each of us the vibrant words that the poet Alda Merini puts into the mouth of Jesus addressed to Peter
Do not deny, Peter,
not escape my Calvary
not run away from my eyes. [...]
I'll put down new roots in the heart.
Why are you running like a deer? Why
hear the cock crow?
not cover her shoulders with a cape
that is not your [...]
You still want to draw anime.
You forfeit the bait fish.
You want to eat the flesh of God
not escape my Calvary
not run away from my eyes. [...]
I'll put down new roots in the heart.
Why are you running like a deer? Why
hear the cock crow?
not cover her shoulders with a cape
that is not your [...]
You still want to draw anime.
You forfeit the bait fish.
You want to eat the flesh of God
Peter, do not leave [...]
get your master's arms [...]
The stones have devastated the hands
but you're a stone
you could raise my wounds, heal
,
close them,
join with me in Paradise.
get your master's arms [...]
The stones have devastated the hands
but you're a stone
you could raise my wounds, heal
,
close them,
join with me in Paradise.
